I am beyond thrilled to write this post today. Besides traveling, I would say my other love in life is movies.
I try to go to the movie theaters at least once a month, and I usually need to see the hottest blockbusters on the Thursdays they come out. But I also love Netflix and Hulu (and when I lived at my parents, their DirectTV movie channel package). And what do I do during those long international flights? Squeeze in as many movies as I can, before I fall asleep.
I contribute this adoration of film to my dad, because 1) he usually doesn’t fall asleep during them like my mom and 2) he is the go-to guy for most film knowledge. Whenever family and friends get together someone always has a question like, “What is that quote from A Princess Bride? Donut, you know, right?” And he usually does.
So, naturally, I thought it was about time I reached out to my favorite Omaha movie blogger and ask her some film questions – but with a travel twist!

What movie most inspires travel for you?
AMLR: I can’t pick just one, but I can recommend a few! Into the Wild is an incredibly inspiring movie for travel. It is based on the true story of a man who sold all his belongings, burnt all his money, and fulfilled his dream of backpacking through the Alaskan wilderness. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is a super unique film and takes an alternative route to conventional travel, in the best way. My favorite road trip movies are both comedy gold – Tommy Boy and Planes, Trains and Automobiles. I feel like these are such random movies, but I think if a movie can make you want to get off the couch, get out and see something new right now, that movie has done its job right.
CC: I immediately The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. I didn’t know if I would enjoy this type of film at first, but it’s honestly incredible. It reminds us to not get stuck in the mundane parts of life and work our lives away simply because we think that’s what we’re “suppose” to do.
What is your favorite foreign film? And why?
AMLR: I don’t see as many foreign films as I should, but this question and your blog have challenged me to change that! Film Streams in town is a great place to find foreign films, many of which that they show go on to be nominated for major awards. Roma was the biggest hit last year, breaking records for being a Netflix film and sweeping the Academy Award nominations as a foreign film. I think Roma is the perfect example of universal storytelling through powerful visuals and organic acting performances. Those three things make movies transcend across all boarders.
CC: I would say Accidents Happen, which is an Australian film. This really stands out to me because it’s so drastically different than films you would see in the U.S., the whole premise is just about a kid who’s seen a lot of death and it’s a really unique film. I think I saw this when I was about 15 and it still stuck with me.
Has there ever been a place you wanted to visit based on a movie? If so, where?
AMLR: Call Me By Your Name will give anyone the travel bug. The rolling hills of the sun-drenched, Italian countryside are unlike anything I have ever seen. Game of Thrones locations were insane, many of which have become landmarks where people can visit in places like Croatia, Spain, and Morocco. If I could just stand in the same place as Daenerys Targaryen, I could die happy.
CC: Mine was Astoria/Cannon Beach, Oregon because of The Goonies and fun fact, I did get to go there with my dad, who also loves this classic 80’s film. #gooniesneversaydie
What actor/actress most surprised you when you found out they weren’t American?
AMLR: Actually, today, I realized Collin Farrell is Irish. His real accent is super thick. I frequently forget Tom Holland is British but once I do remember, I think his American accent is almost comical. He over enunciates everything! James McAvoy is also the best example – I am not even sure where he is really from because he can do every accent perfectly. (See Split for reference.)
CC: James McAvoy because, I first saw him in Wanted, where he had an American accent. I then saw him in X-Men: First Class where he plays Charles Xavier, but the character is meant to be British, so I thought he had a good British accent at first.
